Discovering Your Dream Career
Article By: Nikisha Thompson

If you are reading this article, I think I can safely assume that you have the desire to spend your days doing something you enjoy. There is no reason that you shouldn't be able to achieve just that. You must first make sure you know yourself well and understand what your passions are.

Dream Careers are all about doing something you are passionate about. Believe it or not, you can use simple past-times to help you discover what jobs you'll enjoy. Your hobbies reveal a lot about your personality. Though they may not be directly related to your career path, they often lead you down a journey of self-discovery. This journey can help you determine many things: whether or not you like structure, if you're interactive or passive, if your thoughts are abstract or concrete, and what fields interest you in general.

Before you begin your self-discovery journey, make a decision to be more open-minded than you have ever been. Let go of all old notions about career fields and dare to try something insanely different. You may find a new passion that you never realized existed before.

The two-part process for finding your dream career consists of exploring opportunities and doing research. You need to spend some time really diving into your hobbies, and picking up new ones. Have no hobbies? Pick up your local community guide and choose the three most interesting classes they offer. This element of discovery is crucial, because in order to choose the right career, you must be in tune with your own likes and dislikes.

During this phase you may also want to take a career quiz to see which industries best match your personality. AnalyzeMyCareer.com offers a series of aptitude and personality tests that can save you a lot of time and effort.

The second part of the process involves learning about the different career paths that exist. Unfortunately our education system is designed so that we only learn about the most common occupations, and receive very little information on alternative careers. Were you ever taught that people interested in studying medecine can specialize in herbs and homeopathic remedies? Have you ever had a travel-journalist present at career day? How many people know exactly what a feng shui consultant does? You get the picture. Know what's out there so you can make the appropriate decision.

FabJob.com offers the some of the most comprehensive dream career guides available, in dozens of fields. You can browse through the career guides on our Dream Jobs page.
AnalyzeMyCareer.com provides access to a database of over 1500 career descriptions. These are good places to start for inspiration and guidance.
